“Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it - its height, the way the sunlight refracts as it passes through - and it's there, you can see it, and you know what it is, it's a wave. And then it crashes on the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just... a different way for the water to be for a little while. That's one conception of death for a Buddhist: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it's meant to be.” - Chidi Anagonye, The Good Place

about

Void considers the duality of two natures: Mother Nature - sometimes violent and unforgiving, sometimes awe-inspiring - and human nature, with our flaws, our inconsistencies, and occasional downright cruelty, juxtaposed with our ability to love. Rather than attempting to compare the two, it merely parallels aspects of both.

Originally conceived as the fifth Claustrophobia full-length album, Void goes for a more minimalist sound overall than the preceding Ruminations, which was the starting point for the sound of this release rather than the spacey, formless dark ambient of EP 3 or the wildly varied selections from the Homeless, Broken, and Abandoned compilation. With the exception of the opening track, which is composed entirely of samples, the remaining three songs were recorded each in a single take with a Nektar SE25 MIDI keyboard direct through Audacity. While the recording is therefore not quite as polished as originally intended, it is sonically and conceptually exactly what it needs to be, which ultimately guided the decision to release it as an EP rather than attempting to expand on it unnecessarily.

Void, the fifth classical element according to Japanese Buddhist thought, represents things not of our everyday life, including those beyond our understanding. It is therefore only fitting that void also represents creative energy; while the music here does attempt to tell a story, both natures are ultimately beyond representation through our limited means of expression.

I can only hope I’ve come close. Thanks for listening.
