about

‘I Was in the Dark’ is the anti-‘Ruminations’; a 10 minute hypnotic noise collage of anger and frustration, unleashed after a year-long effort of attempting to make something beautiful and meditative.

Stretching the limits of what can be considered music, this one track EP serves as further proof that, while Claustrophobia may never make anything objectively “good”, there will always be a place for some genre-hopping and experimentation. But while ‘I Was in the Dark’ might fall under a category of highly experimental music, it is incredibly straightforward in its intentions and composition, so much so that it may, in fact, be the least experimental thing in the ever-expanding Claustrophobia discography. There is no range of emotions here, only the constant bludgeoning of noise permeated by the occasional scream, vocal sample, or the long-awaited return of E. Vil Laundree to the guest appearances list.

‘I Was in the Dark’ is ultimately nothing more than a brief purging of emotion, a kind of spiritual sequel to 2017’s ‘Where Were You When the World Got Cold?’ which echoed similarly dark thoughts. That’s where the similarities end, however, as ‘I Was in the Dark’ represents yet another musical turning point for the project and perhaps hints at what may be to come in future… should there be one.
